Special Containment Procedures: SCP-9118 is to be stored in a standard anomalous document sleeve within a humidity-controlled, fire-resistant small item locker at Site-██. Removal requires written authorization from two senior staff members, at least one of whom must hold Level 4 clearance. Personnel with documented financial interests in professional motorsport or the tobacco industry are ineligible for assignment to this caseload.
Containment of SCP-9118-1 is not currently feasible. Active protocol is limited to prevention of pact reactivation.

Description: SCP-9118 is a thaumaturgically active contractual document. It is written on vellum in a combination of standard Italian and a partially deciphered thaumaturgic notation derived from an Etruscan-adjacent script. The document bears two signatures. The first has been confirmed by forensic analysis as belonging to Enzo Anselmo Ferrari (1898-1988). The second consists of a symbol recurring throughout the body of the document and is attributed to SCP-9118-1. Ferrari's signature is composed of human blood. The countersignature is composed of tar, cigarette ash, and an unknown organic compound. SCP-9118 was recovered in 1987 during a Foundation operation in Maranello, Italy, unrelated to the anomaly.
SCP-9118-1 is a paraconscious egregoric entity. It does not occupy a fixed physical location and is not amenable to standard containment procedures. SCP-9118-1 is not sentient in any conventional sense. SCP-9118-1 exists to fulfill a single iterative function and will continue to do so indefinitely without external direction.
SCP-9118-1 sustains itself through witnessed iconography, namely the display of tobacco branding before large assembled audiences. The effect scales with audience size. A single Formula One race seen by 80 to 150 million viewers provide SCP-9118-1 with energetic input the Foundation's models estimate as equivalent to fourteen to eighteen months of ambient accumulation from standard commercial advertising.
SCP-9118-1 has not received sustained witness iconography since 2008. Foundation models indicated that SCP-9118-1 has been in progressive energetic decline since that date.
Addendum A: Recovery and Translation
Recovery
SCP-9118 was recovered on 11/03/1987 during Foundation operation CERCHIO CHIUSO, a raid on a private residence in Maranello, Emilia-Romagna, Italy. The residence belonged to ████ ███████, a former administrative employee of Ferrari S.p.A. The subject was not present at the time of the raid and has not been subsequently located.
Anomalous properties were identified on-site by an attending field agent, who noted that the document's notation system did not correspond to any known legal or notarial format and that the countersignature ink produced an anomalous thermal reading on standard equipment. SCP-9118 was immediately quarantined and transferred to Site-██ for analysis. It was assigned its current designation within the month.
Translation
Full translation was completed on 11/11/1996 by Foundation thaumaturgic linguist Dr. ███ ████████. The process required twenty-six months with three clauses still being contested and one remaining wholly untranslated. Passages in italics represent the thaumaturgic notation sections. The untranslated clause is represented by ~~~.
Agreement of Consideration and Performance
This agreement is entered into between the party of the first part (hereafter: the Stable; the Horse; the Name) and the party of the second part (hereafter: the Smoke; the Witness; the Hunger).
The party of the first part shall display the iconography of the party of the second part upon all competing vehicles, visibly and continuously, for the duration of each sanctioned competitive event, before an assembled audience of sufficient scale.
In return, the party of the first part shall field motor racing vehicles of preternaturally competitive performance. This consideration shall be withdrawn immediately and without notice upon cessation of witness iconography. Partial satisfaction of this condition is recognized and shall be rewarded thusly in turn.
The party of the first part shall have no recourse, appeal, or remedy under natural law. This agreement is binding in perpetuity upon the enterprise of the Stable, irrespective of changes in ownership, personnel, or commercial structure. The Horse runs under the Name as long as the Smoke billows off its back.

Ferrari began 2022 with their most competitive car in fourteen years. Their lead driver won the opening race and led the championship for the first third of the season.
The following occurred between Round 8 and the end of the year.
**Round 8:** Leclerc retired from the lead with an engine failure on lap 21. No mechanical cause consistent with the failure mode was identified post-race.
**Round 12:** Leclerc led the race from the start and spun into the barriers on lap 18. He made no contact with another car. No mechanical cause was identified.
**Round 13:** Ferrari brought Leclerc in for a tire change under a safety car and fitted the wrong compound. He finished sixth. The team acknowledged the error.
**Round 15:** Ferrari left Leclerc on deteriorating tires under a safety car while competitors changed to fresh tires. He finished fourth. The team acknowledged the error.
**Round 18:** Ferrari were eliminated from championship contention. Leclerc finished second on the road, then received a time penalty that dropped him to third.
Ferrari finished second in both championships. Leclerc lost the title by 146 points.
During the post-race debrief following Round 8, a Ferrari garage technician was found unresponsive in one of the bays in the pitlane. He was pronounced dead at scene. Cause of death was recorded by local authorities as cardiac arrest. At 34 years old he had no prior history of cardiac events. Toxicology returned no findings of note, with the exception of nicotine levels consistent with heavy long-term smoking.
I am recommending the untranslated clause be treated as an active containment priority.

The entity accreted during the mid-twentieth century from mass ritualistic behaviour associated with tobacco consumption. It operated under a binding thaumaturgic agreement with an Italian motor racing enterprise from approximately 1955 until 2008, during which it fed on broadcast spectatorship of tens of millions per event.
The agreement lapsed due to regulatory pressure. The entity has been in a state of deprivation since 2008. Foundation containment has been focused entirely on preventing reactivation of the original agreement.
This is a mistake on their part.
The entity does not require tobacco. It requires witnessed iconography before a sufficiently large audience. Tobacco was the vehicle available to it in 1955. It is not the only vehicle available now. With fifteen years of deprivation it will accept almost any arrangement at this point. This mechanism does not distinguish between products.
The global pharmaceutical market is worth approximately $1.4 trillion. To have market dominance in any major therapeutic category (cardiovascular, oncological, neurological, psychiatric, etc.) represents returns that trump anything the tobacco industry has achieved.
We are proposing making drugs that produce an anomalous level of dependency. A patient who requires a drug to function is a patient who will pay any price, accept any side effect, endure any shortage.
Projected client interest includes but is not limited to:
-Three of the five largest pharmaceutical corporations by market capitalisation
-Two state-adjacent sovereign wealth funds with significant pharmaceutical holdings
-One private equity consortium currently acquiring regional hospital networks across fourteen countries
Anomalous withdrawal at population scale is not fully modelled. Client-side liability.
