Item #: SCP-9187
Object Class: Euclid
SCP-9187 in the process of smoking a cigarette.
Special Containment Procedures: SCP-9187 is to be contained inside an anomalous object locker at Site-██, placed on a non-slip, impact-resistant rubberized surface within a sealed containment cell (minimum two cubic meters). The cell's floor and walls are to be covered with padding to prevent damage to the object during agitation events.
SCP-9187 must be "fed" a combustible smoking implement (cigarette, cigarillo, cigar, or approved electronic nicotine delivery system, i.e. electronic cigarette or vape pen) to control and prevent the increasing likelihood of a violent agitation event. The precise interval fluctuates unpredictably in a range between three and eleven hours. As such, the object is to be kept under surveillance and its feeding schedules are to be dynamically adjusted based on observed behavioral patterns.
Only pre-approved, low-toxicity tobacco products are to be used in order to minimize particulate accumulation within the containment cell. Additionally, air filtration systems rated for fine smoke particulates (PM2.5) are required and must be serviced weekly. Otherwise, personnel are not required to inhale or interact with the smoke.
SCP-9187 consumes the implement autonomously once it is placed into its intake opening. Under no circumstances should personnel attempt to obstruct, seal, or place anything other than the approved smoking implements into the opening.
In the event that SCP-9187 enters its agitation state, personnel are to avoid direct contact with any part of the object until all motion ceases. Remote manipulators are authorized for repositioning the object.
Description: SCP-9187 is a Soviet pedestal-style desk lamp, visually similar to production units manufactured by ZiK in 1981. The object features a base made of glazed ceramic supporting a metal lamp assembly with a decoratively perforated cylindrical housing. It is topped with a wide, ribbed glass diffuser, which does not appear to be part of the original set.
The lamp shows moderate wear including mild surface abrasion, discoloration, and heat-related patina on metallic components, suggesting that the lamp has been subject to a significantly prolonged use. The power cable is permanently affixed to the lower part of the base and exhibits typical PVC insulation aging. A 1.7 cm diameter opening is present on the side of the ceramic base, inconsistent with other lamps of this style and particular model. Soot-like deposits and discoloration are seen surrounding the opening.
When powered, SCP-9187 functions as an ordinary lamp of its type, producing diffused illumination typical of incandescent bulbs filtered through textured glass. Although all anomalous properties manifest independently of the power state, the installed E26 100W incandescent bulb has not shown signs of degradation, despite being subjected to an estimated 46,000 total hours of non-continuous operation since the object's acquisition.
SCP-9187's anomalous properties manifest through its interaction with combustible smoking implements:
- When a lit cigarette (or similar object) is placed into the opening, SCP-9187 will draw in and "consume" it over a period of three to seven minutes.
- Combustion proceeds without major ash accumulation. A majority of the byproducts, including smoke, are typically absorbed into SCP-9187. The amount of residual smoke varies, but is typically minimal.
- Internal examination via X-ray and CT scan reveal no internal mechanisms capable of facilitating this process.
If SCP-9187 is not provided with a smoking implement within its required interval, it enters a progressive agitation state:
- 0-5 minutes overdue: Audible ratting, minor vibrations.
- 5-20 minutes overdue: Increased vibration amplitude, object begins to locomote across surfaces via said oscillation. If powered, light strength fluctuates by an approximate 15% lower or higher than the norm.
- 20+ minutes overdue: Violent, erratic and unpredictable motion. Object may displace itself from elevated surfaces. If powered, light strength fluctuates significantly, flashing repeatedly and inconsistently.
- 47+ minutes overdue: (See Addendum 9187-3: Incident Log 9187-A)
Providing a smoking implement at any stage immediately terminates the agitation state.
Notably, its oscillations do not seem to correspond to any identifiable mechanical or electromagnetic processes.
Addendum 9187-1: Feeding Interval Study
All attempts to establish a predictable feeding schedule have failed. The interval seem to fluctuate randomly within a defined range, although minor correlations have been observed with ambient conditions:
- Lower temperatures (below 10°C) correlate with shorter intervals (three to nine hours).
- Periods of prolonged inactivity (no feeding) results in temporarily reduced tolerance windows.
- Providing the lamp with a constant nicotine smoke input via hose inserted into its opening results in temporary termination of the agitation state, followed by a sudden activity spike as the lamp instantly enters the third stage of said state.
No consistent pattern has been identified.

Findings suggest SCP-9187 responds to nicotine content, rather than form factor and combustion characteristics.
Addendum 9187-3: Incident Log 9187-A
On ██/██/20██, a scheduled feeding was delayed by an approximately 47 minutes due to personnel miscommunication. SCP-9187 progressed through stages I-III, and subsequently entered an extreme Stage IV agitation state.
During Stage IV, SCP-9187 exhibited motion exceeding previously documented limits. The lamp achieved rapid displacement across the containment cell, including several brief periods of non-contact movement: the object was observed to remain suspended several centimeters above the floor without visible support, and continued to fling itself violently across the room. Impacts against surfaces resulted in structural damage to internal padding and a single measurable dent in the underlying support structure after a particularly powerful launch. Notably, neither the lamp itself nor its glass diffuser or bulb sustained any visible damage. Resumed motion remained inconsistent with passive ricochet behavior.
Additionally, SCP-9187 began emitting a continuous stream of smoke from its opening. Automatic air-filtration systems were triggered by a sudden spike in airborne particulate concentration. The audio recording captured a regular, low-frequency oscillation described by personnel as resembling heavy, labored breathing.
Remote insertion of a lit cigarette via manipulator arm resulted in the immediate termination of all agitation state activity. The cigarette was consumed significantly faster than baseline observations, measuring under 90 seconds. Following the event, SCP-9187 remained inactive for approximately 19 hours.
Further agitation state developments are considered high-risk and require immediate intervention protocols.
