Special Containment Procedures: All field agents are to report any individuals meeting the following diagnostic criteria:

  • Avoidance of caffeinated and alcoholic beverages

Reported individuals are to be tracked and administered the Bayes-Sanders test at the earliest opportunity. Individuals with a negative result are to be amnesticized and released. Individuals with a positive result are to be relocated to a Foundation facility for research, containment, and timely disposal.

Description: SCP-9294 is an anomalous species with potent cognitohazardous properties. SCP-9294 instances resemble large, bipedal insects. They typically stand 2.0-2.5 meters upright and weigh 60-80 kilograms. Instances are fairly sensitive to light and usually nocturnal. They are omnivorous, with a dietary profile very similar to humans, albeit with lower tolerance for certain compounds. A scientific consensus has not been reached on the intelligence of SCP-9294: some argue instances are sapient and approximately equivalent to humans in cognitive abilities, while others claim their apparent intelligence is simply a product of their cognitohazardous effects.

Anything that visually observes the "face" of an SCP-9294 instance invariably believes that instance to be a human female, regardless of evidence to the contrary. This effect is designated SCP-9294-B. It is indefinite in duration, but can be reversed if an affected individual can no longer recall the appearance of an instance's "face". Amnestic treatment can be used to trigger this reliably, but severe cases of mundane amnesia have also been known to reverse the effect.

Individuals affected by SCP-9294-B perceive instances as communicating with them and others. Video and audio recordings of instances have not shown any evidence of them talking or otherwise transmitting information when reviewed by unaffected individuals. However, all affected individuals report the instance in any given recording as speaking approximately the same words. As with intelligence, it is a matter of much debate as to whether they are truly communicating with humans: some say this is the result of human gestalt consciousness creating an expectation that is fulfilled by SCP-9294-B, rather than actual transmission of ideas by the instance. Most instances are perceived as morbid or tactless, apparently discussing taboo topics with unusual frequency. The significance of this fact is unknown. Instances also cannot type or write. SCP-9294-B seems unable to account for this; humans can notice this fact and take action accordingly. This causes instances to typically be identified as having some type of developmental disorder at a young age.

SCP-9294 is an obligate parasite of humans. Young instances embed themselves into human family structures, initially appearing as infants and growing as humans do. All affected members of the family will consider the instance to be the sister of one child in particular, designated the "target". In all recorded cases, the target will develop a close personal relationship with the instance. The target assists the instance with tasks it cannot perform, while developing a severe emotional dependence on it. Targets that lose their associated instance, whether from death or separation, will exhibit extreme grief, typically resulting in major depressive symptoms. As SCP-9294 instances rarely outlive their target, this psychological damage is considered a significant secondary danger of SCP-9294 remaining inadequately contained.

Although SCP-9294 instances grow at a similar rate to humans, developing alongside their targets, they do not have the same lifespan: they generally live 40 years at most. When an instance nears the end of its life, it will mate with an instance of the other sex. Male instances will die shortly after mating, while female instances will engage in oviposition before death.

In all cases where the target is accessible, the instance will attempt to oviposit within them. The ovipositor is extremely sharp, capable of penetrating into the abdominal cavity and inserting eggs quickly: the procedure usually takes 10-15 minutes. This process is visibly painful, but no attempts by the target to prevent or stop it have been recorded, and targets universally do not discuss the event or acknowledge its occurrence, becoming agitated if pressed and typically defending the instance from accusations. This is the primary danger of SCP-9294 remaining inadequately contained.

The eggs and larvae acquire nutrients from the target by connecting to the circulatory system and siphoning blood. Gestation takes approximately 5 months, at which point between 2 and 5 SCP-9294 larvae will exit the target's body through the wound created by the oviposition. Larvae will search for a parent of at least one child and embed themselves in the family structure, continuing their life cycle. Larvae are rendered unnoticeable by SCP-9294-B during this phase, ensuring they can locate an eligible family without obstruction.

Targets are typically weakened significantly by hosting SCP-9294 larvae, but fatalities are rare and most make a full recovery within 6 months. No target has been recorded to seek medical attention for ailments related to SCP-9294 larvae.

Addendum: Bayes-Sanders Test Procedure: The Bayes-Sanders test is an efficient method of determining whether an individual is an SCP-9294 instance without the need for expensive repeated amnestic treatment or unreliable software. The steps are as follows:

1. Prepare menthol-containing toothpaste, a flashlight with an output of at least 700 lumens, and any insecticide spray.
2. Isolate the subject to be tested in a secure location.
3. Dermally apply the toothpaste to the subject. Some force may be necessary.
4. If the subject exhibits extreme and prolonged (>15 minutes in duration) distress, record one point.
5. Set the flashlight to its highest brightness and shine it at the subject.
6. If the subject exhibits extreme and prolonged (>15 minutes in duration) distress, record one point.
7. Spray the insecticide at the subject.
8. If the subject exhibits extreme and prolonged (>15 minutes in duration) distress, record one point.

If 2 or 3 points are recorded, the test is positive. If 0 or 1 points are recorded, the test is negative.

The Bayes-Sanders test is not perfectly reliable and false positives may occur. Agents may request an additional amnestic-assisted test, subject to approval.
