Item Number: 9802

Object Class: Thaumiel

SCP-9802.

Special Containment Procedures: SCP-9802 is currently tasked with cooling Site-476's server and break rooms. It is rendered immobile, and has been given limited access to live security camera footage to allow for real-time cooling of sections that require it most.

Personnel are encouraged to talk with SCP-9802. Conversation is key to maintaining its demeanor due to its static nature making other forms of enrichment impossible.

Description: SCP-9802 is an outdoor air-conditioning unit which is sentient and proficient in American English. How SCP-9802 vocalizes is currently unknown, and it does not display fluency in any language except its current dialect. Otherwise, SCP-9802 is completely non-anomalous.

Discovery: SCP-9802 was found during a routine sweep of Site-476's external perimeter. Low-Level Field Agent Logan Greenwood was conducting a regularly-scheduled security walk around the perimeter when SCP-9802 called out to him. Agent Greenwood switched on his body camera shortly after initial contact.

[BEGIN LOG]

[Recording begins midway through Agent Greenwood and SCP-9802's conversation.]

9802: —don't you understand? I have been sitting out here for a week. A week, waiting to be properly hooked up or connected or something, and nobody has paid any attention to my cries for help!

Greenwood: You've been talking this entire time? How come I never noticed you?

9802: God if I know. You have headphones in, usually.

Greenwood: Do not say that out loud. I'm— I shouldn't be doing that, I know.

9802: Is that… so?

[SCP-9802 begins to spin up its motor to maximum, causing its speech to become significantly louder.]

9802: THIS PERSON HERE IS BREAKING—

Greenwood: Shut up. I'll— what do you want? I'll do it. Just shut up, please, I can't afford another reprimand so soon after the last.

9802: What did you do to be stuck out here anyways? Meh, whatever it is, I feel for you. It's hot as hell out here, I can tell that much.

Greenwood: I'd rather not talk about it. As for the heat—

[Greenwood sits down.]

Greenwood: It's just as bad inside. Worse, really, because there's no fucking ventilation. A bunch of us are taking unofficial breaks in cold storage just to cool off. Fucking forget about trying to sleep. [He sighs.] How do you know anyways?

[The two pause for a few seconds.]

9802: I'm… an A/C? Y'know? Even if I wasn't, I can see you sweating, anyways, even if I can't actually feel the sun myself.

Greenwood: Fine. Can we focus? What is it that you want?

9802: I just want to do my job. Take me inside.

Greenwood: I was going to do that anyways. We need to catalog you.

9802: Good. The quicker we get in, the quicker I can do what I'm here for.

Greenwood: Don't hold your breath. I wouldn't expect it to be fast. We're not exactly… known for going quickly here. Bureaucracy, red tape, emails. [The camera briefly rises and falls as he shrugs.] 'Less you take a little more leave than you should, in which case they're fast as shit.

9802: Oh, joy. Wish I didn't get left here in that case.

Greenwood: You— who left you here?

9802: I cannot answer that question. I don't know myself. Just guessing that that's what happened to me, really.

Greenwood: So what, you just woke up?

9802: Pretty much. It's been about seven days, I think?

Greenwood: Give me a sec. You're not like, dangerous?

9802: No. I don't feel dangerous.

[Agent Greenwood pings Site-476's Collections and Acquisitions team for immediate pickup.]

Greenwood: You haven't tried to leave?

9802: I am bolted to the ground.

Greenwood: Ah.

[END LOG]

SCP-9802 was brought in by Collections and Acquisitions following scans performed outside. Personnel determined that SCP-9802 did not pose a threat and did not contain any weaponry or means of causing damage.

The internals of SCP-9802 were visualized with its consent. Minor modifications that appear to assist in its operation as an air-conditioner were discovered. These consist of:

  • No power source.
  • A weight five times that of typical A/C units of its size.
  • Extensive thermal vision matrices allowing for detailed analysis of ambient temperature, as well as the heat of surrounding objects or entities.
  • A rapidly adapting electromechanical core, giving SCP-9802 the ability to incorporate and connect to a variety of electronic and computational systems. While SCP-9802 appears to be unaware of this, the matrix appears to be restricted to only affecting its cooling components.
  • Of note: No means of self-propulsion. Presumably, SCP-9802 was delivered to Site-476 via external means.
  • No markings that would indicate an origin of SCP-9802 were found.

Note: During the visualization and analysis process, SCP-9802 often complained about being delayed from its work. While plans to re-install it into Site HVAC systems have been proposed, these endeavors have been deemed too risky due to a lack of information regarding SCP-9802 and its appearance on-site without triggering any security measures.

Agent Greenwood then requested time with SCP-9802 to perform a post-processing interview, standard for sentient and sapient anomalies. Given he was the first to make contact, this was approved on the presumption that a rapport had been formed. Prior to this, Agent Greenwood was tasked with reviewing security footage to determine SCP-9802's method of entry.

[BEGIN LOG]

A portion of Agent Greenwood's view.

[Agent Greenwood has made his 15th lap of the day. Nothing is out of the ordinary. He has earphones in, and is dancing as he walks.]

[SCP-9802 begins to speak, sounding shocked.]

9802: Hwuh! Sweet mother of god. I— where— hello! You! Do you hear me?

[There is no response. Greenwood dances past, much to SCP-9802's distress. Five minutes of redundant yelling have been removed.]

9802: Where am I? What am I? Gods it's dusty out here, augh.

[Following a break, Greenwood returns. He is on his 16th lap of the perimeter.]

9802: Please take me inside?

[END LOG]

[BEGIN LOG]

Okay, okay, that one's on me. I do hope that my good work here is… preemptively helping. But of note — this is the first time that it spoke. It had no reason to fake it. It sort of just spontaneously shows up, and to me that means it was spatially transported? Portal-type thing, y'know? Except, well, nothing of the sort was there on any of the tapes.

The next time, though, I took my earbuds out. They were dead.

[Agent Greenwood is on his 21st lap. There are signs of visible distress due to the heat, with facial flushing and large sweat stains on his clothes. He wipes his forehead with his sleeve.]

Greenwood: Fuck, it's hot. God, I wish they actually fixed the fucking A/C inside.

9802: You. I know you can hear me now. I can help? I feel that I can, at least. Look.

[SCP-9802 spins up. It sounds exactly like its non-anomalous counterpart.]

9802: See! I'm quite good at my job.

[Thermal sensors indicate that it is cooling the surroundings at a slightly quicker rate than a non-anomalous counterpart. Still, Agent Greenwood does not respond or appear to notice SCP-9802.]

9802: Hel-lo!

[END LOG]

And I don't remember it speaking. I didn't hear it. I remember this very well (because I was thinking about getting a change of fucking clothes (note to self, remove this "fucking" later LG). I'm mildly concerned for potential sensory effects that we're missing? Some antimemetic bullshit (note to self, remove this "bullshit" later LG)?

That, or maybe I just was heat exhausted. I've never really been a stickler for details. Or protocol. Or anything, really. I kinda earned being here, huh?

Either way, maybe it's a positive. Agent Greenwood's on the map now, even if it's just for a little. Thought I was going a bit stir-crazy because I wasn't getting my laurels. Anyways, based on what I know now, it's a sort of freak accident. Will of God bullshit like Frankenstein, really. Poor thing. It couldn't have been born somewhere not so hostile?

TO SITE-476 LEADERSHIP:

We understand that there may be some difficulty with the Site's air-conditioning. We have asked repair teams to come out as soon as possible. However, transit is difficult when coming to Death Valley. We ask for your patience, and for potential minor protests that we have caught wind of to please die down peacefully.

Extensive testing was carried out to determine potential origins, or at the least, the original mode of transport of SCP-9802. Below is a table of tests that were performed, along with their results. Additional notes are attached following the table.

TEST

SIGNIFICANT RESULTS?

Materials unique to Prometheus Labs

NO

Materials unique to Anderson Robotics

NO

Materials unique to any known Group of Interest

NO

Self-transport

NO

Interview

NO

Review of Site-476 equipment order forms

NO

Extremely slowed tape recording to determine if hyperaccelerated activity, colloquially known as "super speed," had a role

NO

Xyank particles corresponding to temporal manipulation

NO

Structural instability, corresponding to transport via spatial anomaly

NO

Akiva radiation

NO*

Note: SCP-9802 did not display Akiva radiation associated with "divinity" or other similarly worshipped beings. However, it appeared to display a decayed form typically corresponding to thoughtform entities — that is, noosphere-derived organisms.

Based on this analysis, we have determined that SCP-9802 is SAFE to integrate into Site-476's systems, and recommend doing so with extreme haste.

[BEGIN LOG]

Greenwood: It may please you to know that we have decided to let you do your job.

9802: Finally. Where do you need me?

Greenwood: Where you were, pretty much. You were more or less already hooked up to the system, just weren't actually doing anything.

9802: Oh. Okay. Sorry about that. Could've made you cold this whole time.

Greenwood: It's fine. Chalked it up to shock, myself. Should have heard yourself on those fucking logs I saw, ha.

9802: What logs?

Greenwood: Security cameras. Y'know, the lil' blinking thing box you might have seen, if you can think back to where you were before?

9802: Ah, I see. Will I have access to these? They seem useful.

Greenwood: No. Just essential systems. We're not sure if you can do much else anyways, given you've only got the parts for, well, y'know.

9802: What? Given what?

[The two are silent for a few seconds.]

Greenwood: You're an air-conditioner. Parts for air-conditioning.

9802: Ah. Understood. In any case, I'm excited to be of use. Let me at them, then!

Greenwood: Yeah, yeah. Mechanics should be around soon. I know they'll be excited about this, at least, even if you barely cool down a thing.

9802: Pleased to hear.

[END LOG]

TO ALL SITE-476 PERSONNEL:

SCP-9802 has been successfully integrated into Site-476's HVAC systems. As a result, cooling capabilities have been restored sitewide, though not at previous capacity. This is understandable, as SCP-9802 remains structurally and technologically similar to its non-anomalous counterpart, and thus has a limited ability when by itself.

Proposals to safely encourage SCP-9802 to utilize its adaptive capacities are currently being considered. Until one is agreed upon, SCP-9802 is not to be told of this component. Agent Greenwood is instructed to continue developing a relationship with SCP-9802.

[BEGIN LOG]

Site-476's surroundings at night.

Greenwood: You're doing a good job, they tell me.

9802: You don't know? Are you not inside?

Greenwood: Not when it matters. I'm out here during the hottest times. Inside it kind of… passively is manageable, it's still hot but not "I want to actively die" hot. I'm usually able to nab some sodas off Andres. The one nice guy in there. Canteen worker. He runs kinda hot too.

9802: Mm. Like I said before — shame this is happening to you.

Greenwood: Eh. I did it to myself, really.

[Greenwood lights a cigarette.]

9802: What are you holding?

Greenwood: Cigarette.

9802: You said you were going to quit.

Greenwood: You saw that?

9802: I did. Why is it on fire?

Greenwood: Ah. Chills me out a little, I guess, when you inhale the smoke it makes. Puff it out. Kind of a bad habit, but I think it makes me look cool.

9802: But it is hot.

Greenwood: No, no cool like fashionable. Like you've got that it.

9802: Something I could try?

Greenwood: You… kind of need a mouth for it.

9802: It seems small enough. Potentially. I cannot be sure.

Greenwood: Well, it is. You can't see? Lemme show you.

[He moves the cigarette directly in front of SCP-9802.]

9802: I can see that. That's what I'm asking about. A big ball of white, no?

Greenwood: Not… quite.

9802: It's right there. Not sure what you mean.

Greenwood: No, no, no. Wait. Hold on, hold on. What color am I?

9802: Almost the same as whatever you're holding. Like, a red? At least, parts of you are.

Greenwood: Huh. Isn't that neat?

[He kneels down in front of SCP-9802.]

Greenwood: What color are my eyes?

9802: Like, a bright neon green.

[Greenwood laughs incredulously.]]

Greenwood: Do you see in thermal? Is this why you were calling the ground red the other day? Poor you. Jesus, fix that when you can.

9802: Is this abnormal?

Greenwood: Very. We can see like, the actual colors things are. You're just seeing the heat map.

9802: Ah. What should I do?

Greenwood: Fuck if I know.

9802: This seems like an impedance.

Greenwood: I am aware.

9802: Is there really nothing? This seeing business seems to come quite easily to you.

Greenwood: Use your little… evolving thingamajig. Y'know?

9802: What are you talking about?

[Greenwood sighs and puts his head in his hands.]

Greenwood: Fuck.

[SCP-9802 quietly whirs.]

9802: Do you need another cigarette?

[SCP-9802 stops spinning its fans.]

9802: Are you sure I cannot try one?

[END LOG]

TO AGENT LOGAN GREENWOOD:

While we disapprove of your unorthodox method of notifying SCP-9802 of its adaptive core, it is undeniable that morale has significantly improved since SCP-9802 has increased its cooling power. However, SCP-9802 is currently unevenly distributing these cold spots, resulting in personnel crowding and frequent lab accidents. Rooms that should remain at room temperature have also been brought below acceptable levels, causing the loss of multiple other teams' research material. Redistribution and equalization of this airflow is imperative.

As a result, SCP-9802 has been approved for further development under the condition that it be granted limited access to site cameras. Security is not a concern — as you have seen, testing has shown that SCP-9802 is unable to comprehend the images it receives beyond their thermal information. This is not expected to change even with its rapid electronic development.

Additionally, of special interest to us is where SCP-9802 acquires the raw materials to construct these parts for itself. As you continue your interviews with SCP-9802, you are to gather all available information pertaining to this mechanism.

[BEGIN LOG]

[Agent Greenwood is outside, speaking to SCP-9802.]

Greenwood: So, two pieces of good news.

9802: More? I didn't realize I had so much coming.

An example of Site-476's cameras.

Greenwood: Neither did I, really. Thought they'd have both of our asses for this one. Toss me in the lil' volcano we have on-site.

9802: Why is that?

Greenwood: Wasn't exactly supposed to tell you about your lil' core thing. But now they know, and! Here's the kicker! They sent me a letter with my name correctly spelled!

9802: This is a good thing?

Greenwood: A very good thing. D'you know that I've barely spent any time inside this fucking site since I've been transferred?

9802: That seems quite hot.

Greenwood: No shit! All because I was coming off of a demotion rather than wanting to work here like all the other people. Fuuuuuck them. There's a reason I don't do any of the science inside — I can't, and even if I could, I don't want to. But—

[He holds the letter up, and taps his name on the letterhead.]

Greenwood: Now they know! And— and they won't treat me like shit anymore.

[9802 briefly spins its fans, producing as ound similar to clearing a throat.]

9802: Back to business, if that's alright. This letter concerns me how?

Greenwood: Well, it's about you. First, you're fine to use your core. Adapt away, my friend.

9802: Joy! And second?

Greenwood: Do you recall those security camera things?

9802: I do. There's one up and to your right, is there not?

Greenwood: There is. You'll be able to see, sort of, at least, through them.

9802: Not properly, though, I assume?

Greenwood: Still not what we see, no. But you can get a better idea of where to push air, where to up the speed, all of that.

9802: I see. Have things been… improper?

Greenwood: Mm, uneven, really.

9802: You make my job so easy, Agent. Thank you.

[END LOG]

TO AGENT LOGAN GREENWOOD:

Multiple reports have been received of heavy power consumption rendering some portions of Site-476's grid completely unusable. This is following SCP-9802's increased integration with the power supply. This suggests it is responsible.

Other complaints regarding damage to instruments have been filed, also coinciding with and following the same date of integration. Determine if SCP-9802 has a role in this.

[BEGIN LOG]

[SCP-9802 has built seven additional identical units, and has grown its haphazard network of pipework and cables to take up a large portion of the wall it is placed next to.]

Greenwood: 9802, you gotta slow down. I'm the only fucking person who sees how bad this is. Nobody else has bothered to come out.

9802: Why slow down? I've learned a lot. Making a lot too, to accommodate everything. I'm glad to hear everyone is liking what I'm doing.

Greenwood: You should see it — I suppose you can, actually, but people are stacking up chairs just to be closer to the vents, to be a little closer to the breeze. Paleontology's actually had to set up a schedule for who gets to stay in the specimen room longest, since it seems like you're hitting the perfect temp there.

9802: I see. I did not realize how much being cool was important to everyone.

Greenwood: Very, very much so. One of, if not the, most important things about being here.

9802: Hm. I will keep this in mind.

Greenwood: I know, I know. But y'know where you're getting the stuff you're using to make more… yous, right?

9802: First of all, Agent, they are not more me's. They're simply extraneous. A little support. More legs, or a third kidney, for a more relatable comparison.

Greenwood: And the other thing?

9802: Is it not just… laying around?

Greenwood: No! You've burrowed into the Site walls, at this point. Half the cables and signalling equipment are gone. You've already taken over every other bit of air-conditioning! Now if you go, they all go, and that's not good for the either of us.

9802: Then I simply won't "go." I can't really, remember?

Greenwood: Not, not like that. Break down, I mean.

9802: I'm certain I'll be fine. Do you want me to withhold from the Site's materials?

Greenwood: Yes. At least the power. Leave the electrical cables alone. Those ones there.

[Greenwood points at a transformer that is dangerously close to SCP-9802's wire tendrils.]

Greenwood: We just… really need this, okay? I really need this.

9802: The cold? It's that important.

Greenwood: That and… other things too.

9802: I won't disappoint.

[Greenwood sits.]

Greenwood: Is that how that works, anyways? You can't keep just… making stuff out of yourself?

9802: Of course not. Matter is finite, so I need something to work with, I assume. The first little bits I was making, I was grabbing things from the ground. The temperature there was actually rather nice to see. Have you considered living underground? Very cold there.

Greenwood: I'd rather have some sun, at least.

9802: You get enough of that as is, no? What with being out here all the time.

Greenwood: Shut the fuck up.

[END LOG]

TO AGENT LOGAN GREENWOOD:

SCP-9802 appears to be currently out of commission. Mechanics tell us that this is due to overheating. While SCP-9802 has adjusted its Site power consumption, it has not adjusted the amount of work it does to compensate for this. Please discuss this with SCP-9802 upon its repair.

Notes from the OR
by Logan

i mean it's not REALLY an OR but like kind of is

  • 9802 is like, dead
  • At least while broken
  • Doesn't do well with overheating
  • Does it even understand the concept of being broken?
  • did it just want to go full speed all the time
  • kinda gotta respect it
  • LAST POPSICLE IN BREAK ROOM 5 FREEZER
  • BEAT ANDRES TO IT
  • I WILL NOT FORGIVE YOU ME, IF YOU DONT GET IT

[BEGIN LOG]

[9802 has just been repaired and re-installed. Greenwood is sitting down, body camera on. He is holding a popsicle.]

Greenwood: This is nothing like a fuckin' cig.

[He takes a few licks, and then attempts to bite the top off. SCP-9802 whirs to life.]

9802: Hello?

Greenwood: Mm!

[He takes the popsicle out of his mouth.]

Greenwood: Ah, you're back! Thank god.

9802: What was that?

Greenwood: You broke. A shame, but you're fine now.

9802: That can occur?

Site-476's morgue.

Greenwood: It can, if you go as hard as you were going. You have to slow down, buddy. For your sake.

9802: Mm. And being "broke" is… not a bad thing?

Greenwood: Broken. I'm broke. You were broken. But, in the moment, I guess? But everyone wants to be cold so they repaired you ASAP. Took like, two hours, maybe? I'm glad. Was worried about you.

9802: I am touched. But afterwards? And they— what is broken?

Greenwood: Okay. How do I put this? Uhhh, go through your cameras to the coldest room you see.

9802: Done. There is a lot of… crates? Hanging slabs?

Greenwood: Ah, sorry, meat fridge! Next one.

9802: Lot of…shelves. Lots of people hunched over the ground.

Greenwood: Paleontology. Didn't they ask you to slow down?

9802: I did. This is less cold than before.

Greenwood: Uh-huh. Keep going. Uhh, should be a U-shape of blue?

9802: Ah, found it. Two people standing, a few more laying down?

Greenwood: Okay. This is a morgue. Do you see the people in the center of the room? Those are also normal, regular old people, like me, for the most part. However, they're not alive right now.

9802: As I was?

Greenwood: Yes. But we put you on a table, like them, and then put some new parts in you, and now you're fine.

9802: Oh. That's quite convenient! I don't have to worry, then?

Greenwood: I mean, still try to take care of yourself. They're only going to fix you because of what you do for them.

9802: Mm. Do you think the cold helped me be fixed? In that way I might be doing things for myself as well.

Greenwood: I… suppose? You did overheat. Stands to reason you uh, cool down from that?

9802: It seems the heat is now more of my enemy than it was before.

[Greenwood's popsicle falls off its stick, falling to the ground with a wet plop. It was only half eaten. He sighs.]

Greenwood: You and me both, pal. You and me both.

[END LOG]

The following recording was obtained immediately prior to Incident 9802. SCP-9802's main body vocalized in English before undergoing rapid development.

[BEGIN LOG]

9802: I am very thankful for the freedom and forgiveness I have been granted. This is a privilege, I know. One I must repay.

9802: Clearly, being cool is important to my friends, my new family.

9802: And I know I can do better. I keep having so much to learn.

9802: I must do this to the best of my ability. I take pride in it!

9802: I already have learned so much. Logan has been so kind to me. Has shown me so much that I would never have seen in those dusty expanses.

9802: In our recent meeting, one thing was of note to me, one new thing I discovered.

9802: There were many people in this 'morgue.' These are people much like Logan.

9802: These were very, very cold, as all should be if I am doing my job properly.

9802: I failed to do my job before. Perhaps some went to this 'morgue' as a result? They have been taken from the heat (and broke as a result, much like me), and now are somewhere cold, to be repaired, much like me.

9802: I can now be something more. Something beyond myself. Beyond this pitiful self being stuck here. I have seen machines that move with my new eyes.

9802: I could move. They would be happy if I could move. They liked when I was in more places.

9802: Thus, it's abundantly clear what I must do.

9802: I will make you cold.

[END LOG]

TO ALL SITE-476 PERSONNEL:

SITE-476 HAS BEEN PLACED ON IMMEDIATE LOCKDOWN. ALL POWER HAS BEEN TEMPORARILY CUT. BE ON THE LOOKOUT FOR:

  • THE SOUND OF SCRAPING METAL
  • AIR THAT FEELS SIGNIFICANTLY COLDER THAN ITS SURROUNDINGS
  • DOORS AND ITEMS THAT FEEL FROZEN TO THE TOUCH
  • VISIBLE ICE BUILDUP
  • THE SOUND OF WHIRRING FANS
  • ANY ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT REMAINING OPERATIONAL, ESPECIALLY CAMERAS.

The following is a transcribed account of Incident 9802, based on eyewitness account and security camera footage. Given the multiple sources needed, they have been compiled into this narrative.

SCP-9802 unscrews its bolts restraining it to Site-476 externally via a screwdriver it has constructed and produced from a side panel. It contorts portions of its metal pipework as fingers to open a nearby door, before shedding these pipes. It continues inwards.

Four wheels form underneath it. A large horizontally-facing cylinder assembles itself on its backside, before revealing this to be a low-power jet propulsion engine utilizing its existing fan type. SCP-9802 has a top speed of no more than 10 km/h at this stage.

It navigates through Site-476's empty hallways by periodically developing more pipework "limbs" to deal with sharp turns and corners while propelling itself forward. It finds an empty containment cell in a centralized location, where it reconnects to the HVAC system via in-room vents.

After doing so, it begins to spin up rapidly, propagating additionally cooling units to send a low-temperature wind that decreases to -35 degrees Celsius. This takes approximately fifteen minutes.

The freezing ambient temperature locks most external doors under a thick layer of frost, and given the gradual nature of this cooling, personnel do not notice until their core temperatures begin to rapidly drop. Heating systems do not work — they have been frozen over or absorbed into SCP-9802.

Personnel in colder spaces, such as hallways or larger rooms, begin to freeze to death. Those in break rooms huddle together for warmth, utilizing all available emergency blankets in vain. The Department of Geology lights all coal specimens ablaze, and huddles around the bonfire. Others pray, to no avail.

SCP-9802 has been monitoring the site through its camera connections that it re-established upon implantation into its current location. It vocalizes.

9802: This is taking far too long.

It attempts to locate Greenwood for help. Disconnecting itself from the network it has created in the containment cell, though replacing itself with another cooling unit, it disembarks with a slightly larger jet propulsion engine this time, reaching a much higher top-speed. It is not equipped to handle this speed, with it taking turns much sharper and shakier than before.

Three minutes after leaving, it has accelerated to a speed of 75 km/h. Junior Researchers Al Wable and Gareth Ravec are rounding a corner when SCP-9802 violently crashes into them without slowing. Its considerable weight means that this collision instantly kills them, pinning their remains against the wall. SCP-9802 backs up from the two corpses before whirring in agreement.

9802: Look at that cooling rate. Much more efficient. [It chirps happily.] Let's do this, instead.

After ceasing vocalizations, it returns to the containment cell it has "nested" at. Multiple cooling units begin to propel themselves in a manner similar to SCP-9802, though these are connected with a long and thin cable to the room's ventilation. Presumably, this indicates that SCP-9802 is controlling these units, and that they are not additional SCP-9802 instances.

These additional units and SCP-9802 begin to accelerate down hallways to catch unsuspecting escapees. Each finds two victims, at the least, with SCP-9802 utilizing camera information to pinpoint their locations. After they have exhausted personnel in hallways, all units except one offshoot begin to re-centralize after a loud noise is heard outside.

Prior to this, during the initial period of freezing, Agent Greenwood is outside, walking his assigned perimeter. He has just finished his 25th and final lap of the day, and attempts to re-enter Site-476 before taking off his headphones.

Greenwood: God, that racket. Did someone pull the fucking alarm again? All the cold air is going to leave when the emergency doors open.

He attempts to open the door. It cannot be opened. He tries again, multiple times, each time failing.

Greenwood: I said, when the emergency doors open. The fuck?

Walking to the nearest window at eye-level, he notes a layer of frost and condensation inside. Taking his standard-issue Foundation sidearm, he shoots through the glass. This makes a small crack. Utilizing the gun as a blunt weapon, Greenwood makes a hole large enough to punch out a significant portion of the pane.

He enters, and switches on his body camera. From this point on, refer to the following documentation.

[BEGIN LOG]

[Greenwood is holding his gun, barrel partially destroyed due to his strikes.]

Greenwood: There goes the gun, I guess.

[He tosses it to the ground with a loud clatter. After a quick look around, he continues on.]

Greenwood: Too fucking quiet. And too fucking cold in here. I should… I don't actually know where I should be going.

[He continues to walk down the main hallway, before reaching a room. The walls and floor have been entirely covered in frost. Aside from the hallway he entered in, three others exit this space. A large ice structure can be seen on the left. He nears it, wiping a thick layer of snow to expose the ice underneath. An open eye can be seen encased in the ice, along with portions of a face.]

Greenwood: Fuck! Andres? That you?

[The eye inside twitches. Greenwood jumps back. The body falls to the ground with a loud crash, and shatters into multiple large chunks. Flesh and bone can be seen.]

Greenwood: Jesus. Let's just… keep on going.

[Greenwood walks down the hallway in front of him. This heads to one of Site-476's breakrooms. The doors appear to be partially obscured. He nears this to investigate further. As he does, it becomes clear that the doors are being blocked by two arms. They have been torn from their body at the shoulder, and their palms are frozen stuck to the door, jutting out at a 90-degree angle. Viscera and bone are exposed, though both arms have stopped actively bleeding.]

Greenwood: Where's the rest of him?

[He turns to the left and walks a short distance down the hallway to the wall. A large splatter stain can be seen. When Greenwood attempts to touch this stain, he trips and falls into a pile of snow and frost.]

Greenwood: Ugh, fuck.

[Greenwood clears some snow from the pile away. The offending item underneath him is a crushed and frozen torso and hips. The legs are nowhere to be seen. He squats down for a closer look. Examining the corpse, it appears to have been killed relatively recently. A pistol is still in the holster, which he takes.]

Greenwood: Poor thing. God. I— I could use your gun. I left mine back there.

[He stops. A quiet rattling can be heard.]

Greenwood: Jesus. Jesus. This is my fault, isn't it?

[The noise quiets, and he slowly begins to back down the hallway, turning towards the room with the four-way intersection.]

Greenwood: I just had to complain for like, three fucking months in front of the same aircon. I fucking— this is all because of me, isn't it? All my bitching. It's my weird Frankenstein's Thought Monster. Fuck!

[The earlier noise now returns, louder, as Greenwood re-enters the room with the frozen corpse. A scraping can be heard from the left and right.]

9802: I see you. Your breath. A lot warmer than the surroundings, y'know.

[SCP-9802 appears to the right. It begins to give chase. Greenwood turns to the left. SCP-9802, however, is utilizing its idle offshoot to attempt to pincer Greenwood. It can be seen on the other end of the hallway.]

Greenwood: Oh hell no. Fuck this.

[Greenwood turns and runs back to the door. He jumps through the smashed window he entered through. Thumps can be heard as SCP-9802 presumably rams the front door to open it.]

Greenwood: Little shit. What the fuck is your problem? I told you to take it easy.

[As he catches his breath, the noises grow louder and more frequent. SCP-9802 and its offshoots are attempting to open the door. Greenwood begins to back away, though is unable to get far before the door swings open, with SCP-9802 itself exiting. As it wheels itself towards Greenwood, the wheels are subsumed into the main body. Greenwood turns and runs.]

Greenwood: No, no, no, no. Not now, 9802. Let's talk, please!

Artist's rendition of SCP-9802 at this time.

[He turns to gauge how much distance he has placed between himself and SCP-9802. By this time, SCP-9802 has significantly changed its body. The main body is considerably higher than Greenwood, with multiple legs made of a mix of cables, wires, and pipework suspending it in the air. The large engine it used for self-propulsion remains.]

9802: Look! I'm better now.

[Utilizing its large engine, it accelerates forward rapidly, attempting to crush Greenwood. He dives out of the way.]

Greenwood: [He spits.] Are you fucking kidding me? Dirt in my fucking mouth! What are you doing, 9802?

9802: Cooling.

[It violently thrusts one of its arms at Greenwood, who ducks.]

Greenwood: What on Earth? Can you just — just a second to explain yourself?

9802: You showed me some very cool bodies. I need to replicate that effort! Make you just like them.

Greenwood: You're going to kill me!

9802: And then we can fix you. It's much too hot out here, isn't it?

[SCP-9802 attempts to crush Greenwood again, three times in rapid succession. This leaves sizable craters on the ground, and large dents in SCP-9802.]

Greenwood: Fuck! That is not how that works for us!

[SCP-9802 pauses. It tilts its main body, almost quizzically.]

9802: Then why were you all kept in those little drawers, if not to be repaired at a later date?

Greenwood: It keeps the bodies cold—

[The central unit bounces up and down with glee. It resumes its assault on Greenwood, though noticeably slower.]

9802: Oh! Joy!

Greenwood: Get away!

[Greenwood scrambles to collect and throw rocks at SCP-9802 while running erratically to evade SCP-9802's arms, which have been attempting to crush him.]

9802: Why are you so insistent on being warm? You were the one who complained the most! I'm just trying to help.

[Greenwood yells back, though has slowed down himself due to the heat. Weather reports indicate that the temperature was nearly 50 degrees Celsius.]

Greenwood: Just leave me alone.

9802: No! You helped me become this! Be of use! And you want me to not give that to you? Are you insane? Perhaps the heat is getting to you. Let me help.

[Greenwood has been cornered against the fence dividing Site-476's external perimeter and the outside world. He unholsters his pistol, and aims it at SCP-9802.]

Greenwood: I will shoot.

9802: You would not.

Greenwood: Try me.

[There is an audible click as Greenwood attempts to discharge his weapon. It appears that the firing mechanism has frozen, rendering it unusable.]

Greenwood: Fuck.

[He does not move, presumably paralyzed with fear, as SCP-9802 takes two arms and lifts him to an estimated 15 meters of elevation. There is condensation on the camera once more, from an unknown source.]

9802: Finally. I'm going to take you, and very quickly throw you into the ground. You'll be cool, then we'll get you as good as new as soon as possible. I just… need a second.

[Greenwood and SCP-9802 look downwards. A length of cable snakes from the cooling unit to the Site in the distance. This cable has been torn, with the other end laying approximately half a kilometer away. In the chase, it appears that SCP-9802 accidentally damaged and destroyed its connection to the cooling unit. Greenwood wipes his camera, as he is gently placed down.]

9802: Hold on, hold on, just wait here, I have to—

[SCP-9802 is steaming violently from its main unit. Its internal mechanisms ignite, creating a fire large enough to be seen externally. It slows down to a crawl the further it gets from Greenwood. It speaks at a very slow speed.]

9802: Not…again?

[A large puff of steam and smoke rises from the main body. SCP-9802 stops, and topples over. It has overheated, and the fire dies down.]

Greenwood: Thank fuck. Time to get inside.

[He kneels.]

Greenwood: Maybe a break, first, actually. Then I know what's coming next, or should be. A promotion. Fuck, I'll take a lifetime's worth of popsicles.

[END LOG]

TO ALL SITE-476 PERSONNEL:

YOU HAVE SUCCESSFULLY SURVIVED. PLEASE REFER TO THE FOLLOWING DOCUMENTATION FOR UPDATED CONTAINMENT PROCEDURES REGARDING SCP-9802. TRAUMA SERVICES ARE AVAILABLE ON REQUEST. IF SYMPTOMS OF HYPOTHERMIA PERSIST, VISIT ONSITE DOCTORS.

Item Number: 9802

Object Class: Keter

Special Containment Procedures: SCP-9802 is currently dismantled until Foundation Cold Storage #A-45 has been constructed.

Description: SCP-9802 is an air-conditioning unit that is capable of subzero temperature generation and the incorporation of non-anomalous technology and metals into its body. These adaptive core mechanisms mean that attempts to reprogram or convince it from prioritizing violence in the pursuit of "cold" have been met with extreme resistance. As such, SCP-9802 will remain dismantled until it is able to be installed in a facility without significant electronic or metal usage.

Cold Storage #A-45 is a low-tech cold storage designed to mimic ancient practices of refrigeration to maintain subzero status, located 25 kilometers from Site-476. While currently in the pre-planning stage, upon construction, #A-45 will be utilized for containment of temperature-sensitive and perishable items. At this time, SCP-9802 will be incorporated and monitored remotely by Newly Mid-Level Field Agent Logan Greenwood from Site-476.

TO ALL SITE-476 PERSONNEL:

We are currently addressing the lack of air-conditioning in Site-476 following Incident 9802. Please account for the fact that all estimates indicate that the soonest available repair date is in 9 days, minimum. Until then, hand fans, ice chests, and popsicles are provided.
