Special Containment Procedures:

Due to the exceptionally large area SCP-9959 covers, it is not to be considered traditionally containable. Monitoring SCP-9959 is to be performed by the Lithosphere Integrated Tracking Headquarters (LITH) Observatory in Area-261. All chemical output by SCP-9959 is to be collected, secured, and brought to Area-261 for further studies. Clearance Level 5 is required to access Area-261 unless special exceptions are made.

Area-261 must run tests Alpha-3 through Gamma-25 daily to collect data on the nature and behavior of SCP-9959. If test Gamma-3 is to be positive, MTF Unit Beta-61 ("Out N' Into Hell") is to be deployed to collect the reported Bodymass-01. Usage of GLiDARC Mark III is to be used once a month to analyze major restructuring by SCP-9959. Secured specimens must be connected through the nanotubes naturally present in SCP-9959 to the main mass to prevent decay of specimens.

Tectonic movement caused by SCP-9959 is to be limited to prevent large-scale natural disasters such as earthquakes. If the mass of SCP-9959 is to fluctuate to one specific area, a Code Orange is to be declared for the affected area. Foundation personnel are to evacuate the affected area within 36 hours of the Code Orange release.

All geological and mining agencies are to be monitored for interaction or discovery of SCP-9959. Reports of "underground biospheres" or sub-ground level microbial life is to be inspected for exposure of SCP-9959. A layer named the "Threshold" has been established 5 kilometers above the main mass of SCP-9959. The Threshold is a stable boundary layer used for safe observation of SCP-9959 and construction of tools monitoring the superorganism.

Update: 2/2/2011: Area-261 must be under lockdown during maintenance and mass surges to prevent rising SCP-9959 mass and prevent Bodymass-10 and Bodymass-11 encounters.

Description:

SCP-9959 is a large, multicellular superorganism located at points ranging from 68-121 kilometers in the Lithosphere partially responsible for tectonic activity on Earth. SCP-9959 consists of multiple bacteria linked together via a 400-nanometer-wide tube-like nerve. SCP-9959 is capable of being resistant to extreme heat up to 4,000 degrees Celsius due to an unknown protein always being replicated and destroyed. Sampling of this protein is impossible due to the protein instantly decaying. All Bodymasses excluding Bodymass-10 and SCP-9959 decay at temperatures below 1000 degrees Celsius.

When observed without a microscope, SCP-9959 appears to be a red, large, gelatinous mass with multiple grooves and a wavelike pattern. Under a microscope, SCP-9959 appears as a group of organelles, bacteria, and viruses in a red plasma resembling blood. SCP-9959 is thought to have formed in the Archean Period and is about 2.1 billion years old. The superorganism also possesses organs of varying size, referred to as Bodymasses, that perform functions (See list below). View Addendum.9959.2 for the reproduction and cloning of Bodymasses.

List of known and identified Bodymasses.

Bodymass-01: Similar to the human brain, it is from 45 to 76 centimeters wide and 52 to 97 centimeters wide. Based on current data, estimations of the total instances of Bodymass 01 are to be around 1,283 1,285. Specimens secured: 2 0
.
Bodymass-02: Bodymass-2 are small organs that are roughly the size of a human's nostril. They are nearly spherical in shape, and their current purpose is unknown. It is theorized that they could be circulatory pumps around SCP-9959, with an estimated 1.3 billion instances. Specimens secured: 12
.
Bodymass-03: Looking similar to a guitar, Bodymass-03 instances are the size of a Loxodonta Africana and are used to initiate movement instructed by Bodymass-01 in SCP-9959. Estimation of the total amount of Bodymass-03 is around 2,000 Specimens secured: 2

Bodymass-04: SCP-9959 uses Bodymass-04 to grasp and acquire items/rock. Bodymass-04 can be stretched up to 12 meters from the base and is made of multiple prokaryotic cells. Specimens secured: 4

Bodymass-05: Instances of Bodymass-05 are small spheres from 20 to 300 micrometers in diameter that accumulate waste material from SCP-9959. When empty, Bodymass-05 appears as a yellow sphere, turning green as it collects more waste material. The spheres are then expelled from the SCP-9959 for 5-12 years until they are reused. There are thought to be 420,320 instances of Bodymass-05 Specimens secured: 58

Bodymass-06: Serving for the same purpose as Bodymass-05, Bodymass-06 is transparent and 10 micrometers in length. The manually collected waste is deposited into the Bodymass-05 instances. Data collected suggests there may be up to 250 million instances inside SCP-9959. Specimens secured: 120,323

Bodymass-07: Extinct.

Bodymass-08: Bodymass-08 relays and rarely acts separately from Bodymass-01. It is considered to be the "head" of SCP-9959's immune system. Often, it attacks living organisms and uses Bodymass-17 and Bodymass-18 to turn them into consumable matter. There may be up to 20,000 instances in SCP-9959. Specimens secured: 1 0

Bodymass-09: Bodymass-09 are small yellow spheres in SCP-9959. They receive and transmit messages from the nearest instances of Bodymass-01 and can often communicate with researchers via Morse Code. They appear to have evolved only recently from Bodymass-07 and have an estimated population of 4.3 million. Specimens secured: 211

Bodymass-10: Bodymass-10 are apple-sized arachnoids that are present near instances of SCP-9959. Along with Bodymass-11, Bodymass-10 is the only other Bodymass that can exit the main body of SCP-9959. Bodymass-10 is part of the main superorganism's immune system. Hostile interactions between researchers and Bodymass-10 are common. The estimation of the population is around 1.2 million. Specimens secured: 122

Notice: Information of Bodymass-11 has been removed due to the severity of a memetic threat it poses. Specimens secured: 0

Bodymass-12: Bodymass-12 is a small vine-like organelle functioning similar to a Pueraria Montana Part of SCP-9959's immune system, it blooms all over SCP-9959 when Bodymass-08 detects intrusion. It often varies in size, but most recovered specimens are 10-20 centimeters in width. Estimation of the population varies due to unique functionality. Specimens secured: 12

Bodymass-13: Bodymass-13 is a macrophage-like creature that collects pieces of food to be brought to Bodymass-18. The population of instances varies due to Bodymass-13 being consumed if food intake is too low. Specimens secured: 800

Bodymass-14: Extinct.

Bodymass-15: Bodymass-15 is responsible for duplicating all other Bodymasses, excluding Bodymass-21. Bodymass-15 is located in the Asthenosphere and revolves around the Earth's core.

Bodymass-16: Extinct.

Bodymass-17: Extinct.

Bodymass-18: Bodymass-18 digests food collected and distributes it across SCP-9959. Bodymass-18 resembles a cow's stomach with four compartments serving an unknown purpose.

Bodymass-19: Bodymass-19 are instances of Pikaia Gracilens in SCP-9959. It often searches for food to be brought to Bodymass-18 and consumes multiple diseases to keep itself alive. Bodymass-19 also travels through SCP-9959 at speeds ranging from 10 kph to 120 kph. There are around 237,611 instances in SCP-9959. Specimens secured: 210

Bodymass-20: Bodymass-20 are instances of a Balaena Mysticetus. Bodymass-20 prevents multiple diseases, such as cancer, in SCP-9959 by filtering multiple organelles and matter through itself. It examines the cells in its stomach, and if any cancerous or diseased matters are detected, it is disposed of with a pocket of hydrochloric acid in its stomach. Non-cancerous or non-diseased cells are excreted. Recovery of Bodymass-20 for use in medicine is not possible due to its decay when outside of SCP-9959. 109,292 instances are inside SCP-9959. Specimens secured: 0

Bodymass-21: Discovered during Ex-Test-211, Bodymass-21 similar to an instance of Bodymass-01 and appears as a cube that controls the entirety of SCP-9959 - suggesting the function of SCP-9959mis is similar to a hivemind. See Addendum.9959 .3.

SCP-9959 is capable of advanced communication by using Bodymass-09 and Bodymass-01 in a basic code similar to the functionality of Morse Code. The superorganism has a sentient identity and can experience and express complex emotions.

On multiple occasions, SCP-9959 has manipulated tectonic plates, causing disasters such as tsunamis, volcanic eruptions, and earthquakes. Based on testing, SCP-9959 does seem to be aware of the damage caused.

Area-261 has been established at 64.89 kilometers under Site-95 to prevent the hazards and disasters posed by SCP-9959.

History:

SCP-9959 is thought to have originated in the Archean Period, with multiple early prokaryotes bonding together for unknown reasons. Radiometric dating from fossilized remains shows that SCP-9959 was originally located underwater in the modern-day Indian Ocean.

SCP-9959 was originally detected on October 2, 1952, after Foundation scientist Dr. Lawrence of the Geological Department had conducted a global scan of the Earth's interior. The superorganism had appeared as a small layer of unidentified rock and liquid in the lithosphere with irregular shapes. Later, on November 4, 1952, a magnitude 9.0 earthquake struck the Kamchatka Peninsula after the unidentified layer had shifted its mass toward the epicenter.

From November 16, 1952, to May 31, 1970, it became evident that the unidentified layer had been the cause of multiple earthquakes via the manipulation of multiple tectonic plates due to observation through scans taken by the GLiDARC Mark I (Possible connection of the earthquakes to SCP-169 was dismissed).

Multiple reports and analyses were forwarded to [DATA EXPUNGED]. Over time, multiple biological characteristics of the superorganism became apparent.

Project Flying Saucer was initiated to attempt a sample retrieval via multiple missions through unmanned drones and drills, but all had failed to make visual contact and return to the surface. A manned mission was launched with a crew of four people in the DESS-25 (See Project Flying Saucer summary file below).

At a depth of 80.67 km on November 1, 1977, the DERS-25 had reached the source of the seismic activity - a biological mass of multicellular organisms. A sample with a volume of 54 cm3 was collected; however, 94% of the sample was found to be deceased after 34 hours on the surface.

Project Flying Saucer

Welcome, user. This is an archived file. Most Recent Iteration: August 1, 1977

Due to the major anomaly detected in the Earth's Mantle, Project Flying Saucer has been initiated to investigate and research the compositions, origins, and effects on the anomalous and unidentified layer referred to as the "Mortasphere."

Project Initiation (Summary): Following the failures of the unmanned drones, the Mortasphere will be reached using the DERS-25. The DERS-26 is to be launched from [REDACTED] on September 30, 1977. Travel time through the crust will take approximately 2 days. Upon entry into the Earth's mantle, drills Zudro-A and Zudro-B will be retracted. All crew must be secured in the DERS Specialized suits and must be stationed in airlock two.

Upon reaching the given target, a sample of the Mortasphere will be collected via mechanical arm and stored in a container in airlock one. Communication between Tower-One and the crew of DERS-25 will be turned offline for the ascent back to the surface.

(2:03:06:53) Dr. Hudson; Well, Tower-One. We're here.**

(2:03:06:56): Static

(2:03:07:01) Dr, Nguyen: Looks like comms is out. Just focus on the sample collection.

(2:03:07:06) Dr. Hudson: Kasyanov, can you activate the mechanical arm?

(2:03:07:11) Dr. Kasyanov: On it.

(2:03:07:17) Quiet hissing is heard

(2:03:07:21) Dr. Kasyanov: You don't think the um- earthqaukes, were 169's doing?

(2:03:08:26) Sgt. Josef: (Appears through a small hatch) No, Dr. Kasyanov. We took this project because of [REDACTED]. So, unless you're telling me that it's embedded in the Earth, then no.

(2:03:08:29) Dr. Hudson: And that also makes it a living organism… Or I suppose it does.

(2:03:08:33) Dr. Kasyanov: Just putting the thought out there.

(2:03:08:38) Dr. Nguyen: (From a corridor) The sample is about to be collected.

(2:03:08:40) Squelching is heard outside the DERS-25.

(2:03:08:49) Dr, Nguyen: Something just… rubbed off us? The hell was that?

(2:03:08:53) Sgt. Josef: No idea. Nguyen, check the cams and radar. Report what you see.

(2:03:09:00) Dr. Nguyen is seen rushing towards a hatch. He unlocks it and doesn't close the door.

(2:03:06:53) Dr, Nguyen: Let's see… Holy shit… Is that… blood? The radar shows it is damn huge.

(2:03:06:53) Red covers the screen as multiple dots flash on another.

(2:03:06:53) Dr. Hudson: Sergeant. Get us out of here!

(2:03:06:53) A loud bang is heard from outside as Sgt. Josef turns on the engine. The red recedes lower.

(2:03:06:53) Dr, Kasyanov: Up!

(2:03:06:53) Dr. Hudson: Secure the airlock, Hudson.

(2:03:06:53) PA System: DERS-25. Communication seems to be down. The Council has your recording. Abort mission.

<End Log>

Research had commenced on the deceased and living parts of SCP-9959. Multiple organelles were documented for the first time. Traces and small populations of the organelles were found in other areas of the underground biosphere after further investigation.

A second manned crew successfully collected a second sample on the DERS-26. When brought to the surface, researchers had documented pulses released from a specific organelle. Other samples observed similar behavior. Over time, a vocabulary was established after similarities between the pulses resembled Morse code. During Experimental Test-6, communication was successfully achieved via copper wires connected to a telegraph that were inserted into sample A-3, resulting in SCP-9959 transmitting multiple messages in the English Alphabet.

On 31 July 2000, Area-261 was established in the Threshold with multiple tools to study and document the varying behaviors of SCP-9959 and other collected samples.

Addendum.9959.1:

A new study has shown that SCP-9959's ability to communicate in Morse Code was first learned in the early 20th century. According to SCP-9959's recollections, it states that multiple signals would be received by it, and over time, it had begun to understand English in Morse Code.

Addendum.9959.2:

NOTICE FROM THE FOUNDATION RECORDS AND INFORMATION SECURITY ADMINISTRATION

Due to the multiple security breaches and anomalous weaponization of collected samples based on this study, Addendum.9959.2 has been removed.

Incident.9959.2004:

From October 12 to 21, 2004, a large part of SCP-9959 started building up underneath the Burma plate and the Indian plate. Researchers had predicted an earthquake with a magnitude of 8.6 to 9.5 to occur when enough mass would cause the two tectonic plates to rupture.

On October 22, 2004, the O5 Council had decided to prevent this catastrophic event by neutralizing part of SCP-9959, referred to as Project Super Glue. A large fleet of unmanned drones and submersibles was built and deployed to the area around Sumatra to drill through the ocean bed and terminate as much of SCP-9959 as possible.

NOTE: 1,400 underwater drones and submersibles are launched from USS Fermi. Another is a drone that is launched, containing a 1 megaton bomb in case a catastrophe is unavoidable. Area-261 has been fully evacuated.

[BEGIN LOG]

Dr. Nguyen: Launch.

O5-8: Launch confirmed.

(A quiet beep is heard.)

<21:21:43:> 1,401 underwater drones and submersibles are launched from USS Fermi.

<21:27:31:> Units reach 1,000 meters below sea level.

<21:47:09:> Units reach 4,000 meters below sea level.

<21:51:11:> Units reach designated drilling positions.

Eng. Orban: Drilling Positions reached.

O5-8: Initiate.

(O5-8 looks at a screen displaying the estimated mass of SCP-9959 under the seafloor.)

Dr. Dawson: Orban, something looks wrong with the seafloor.

(Multiple large fractures on the seafloor come into view. A red gel-like substance slowly reeks out of it.)

O5-6: Shit. We need to get lower faster.

<21:52:39:> Unit D-203 collects a sample and exterminates the rest of the SCP-9959 leakage.

<21:59:23:> Drills penetrate the crust.

Eng. Orban: This thing might have even cracked the crust right now. (Clicking on keyboard) See this data here… The whole fu-

O5-8: Not yet. The secondary sensors indicate that the crust can hold on for the next twenty days.

(The screen flashes red as multiple alarms goes off.)

O5-8: That… Is not the crust.

O5-6: Somebody call Cadbury. Looks like the warhead has some technical difficulties.

(Engineer Orban walks to a keypad and enters a number.)

Dr. Cadbury: Dr. Cadbury speaking. You've reached Site-01.

<22:19:41:> Dr. Cadbury relinks the warhead to the main unit.

<22:21:00:> R1 scheduled charges are detonated.

<22:22:03:> Drills reach designated position Ph2.

<23:55:32:> Drills report interference.

<00:01:43:> Bodymasses-10 are reported in the fracture.

<00:04:22:> High-temperature weapons are deployed onto the instances as multiple units are immobilized.

Dr. Nguyen: Bodymass-11 signatures have been picked up by primary sensors.

O5-6: Then cut the damn feed already! Mute the audio and let the drones use hydrochloric acid.

(Dr. Nguyen and Eng. Orban rush to switch off the visual feed and audio transcription.)

PA System: Warning! Warning! Warning! Bodymass-11 is detected. Approximation to reach Bodymass-11: T-minus 134 seconds.

<00:06:47:> ████████ ████ ████ ████ █ - SIGNAL INTERRUPTED

<00:21:00:> SIGNAL REGAINED: Drills reach the Threshold. All units take position.

<00:27:17:> SCP-9959 mass pushes against the crust. Units use high-temperature weapons.

<00:31:11:> Bodymass-12 destroys all drills.

<00:34:51:> Bodymass-01 instance is destroyed. SCP-9959 slightly recedes.

Dr. Nguyen: Yes! It appears to be receding.

(A screen shows SCP-9959receding lower and abruptly stopping.)

Eng. Orban: No, it isn't… It's getting force. Force to slam into and above the crust.

(Multiple researchers rush to find a way to counter the kinetic energy of SCP-9959 when it hits the crust.)

O5-8: Just absolutely great! Tens of millions of people are at risk.

(O5-8 looks at a red button.)

Eng. Orban: Not now.

O5-6: I'm afraid that we'll have to, Orban.

O5-8: (Walking over to the red button) We'll just put on auto. If it gets out of hand, it'll detonate by itself.

Eng. Orban: That bomb will take lives. Aren't we trying to prevent that?

O5-6: Lives that will still succumb to the earthquake even if we didn't detonate it! If we don't risk that, millions more will die… If 200,000 die from the bomb… Then at least 10 million will die from the earthquake. One of the most powerful that will ever be.

<00:46:05:> SCP-9959 begins to accelerate toward the crust.

<00:51:11:> SCP-9959 is 1 kilometer from the crust. Units switch to hydrochloric acid.

<00:51:21:> Units deploy hydrochloric acid.

<00:51:27:> SCP-9959 starts to dissolve as it almost contacts the crust.

<00:53:40:> Bodymass-12 instances destroy many drones. Units attempt to protect drones.

<00:55:16:> SCP-9959 attempts to throw the part of it onto the crust.

<01:00:01:> SCP-9959 makes contact with the crust at ███ kph.

SIGNAL LOST

Eng. Orban: The bomb… it activated.

O5-8: Then majority of it should be gone.

Dr. Nguyen: Unfortunately, no. The primary, secondary, and tertiary sensors say a giant shockwave is travelling through the crust. A giant rupture occurred between the two plates, over 1,200 kilometers apart.

O5-6: (Holds head in hands.) What magnitude will it be?

Dr, Nguyen: Between 9.1 and 9.3.

FOUNDATION REPORT (I.9959.2004)

Reports from Foundation facilities indicate that a 9.2 to 9.3 magnitude earthquake occurred near northern Sumatra. Multiple tsunamis had occurred all around the area, causing destruction and leaving remnants of SCP-9959 scattered across multiple beaches. Although the remnants had decayed, multiple exposed instances of Bodymass-10 had to be destroyed as a mass amnesticization took place.

Scans through the GLiDARC Mark III show that most of SCP-9959 was vaporized in the detonation of the 1 megaton atomic bomb and prevented a larger earthquake that would have caused a permanent rupture in the crust.

Due to the failure of Project Super Glue, Ex-Test-211 was to take place to establish friendly communication with the superorganism to manipulate tectonic plates, preventing large-scale disasters from happening.

Death Toll: 227,898 people.

Addendum.9959.3:

On November 29, 2005, Ex-Test-211 was conducted on sample A-10 measuring 12m3. The test was conducted to attempt cooperation between SCP-9959 to prevent major disasters related to geotectonic movement.

The test had been attempted multiple times throughout the day with other samples and sample A-10 - all of them had not cooperated, accusing multiple researchers of causing them pain. It is thought that the majority of sample A-10 was exhausted pre-testing.

Researcher Abraham Hughes had to consult with sample A-10 and possibly.

<20:10:> Lt. Josef: (Restarts communications) Nguyen let me back in!

<20:14:> Dr. Nguyen: The data has been collected. The suit is being pulled back.

[END LOG]

In the interaction, SCP-9959 refers to a cube-like mass approximately 3 meters in length as its brain. This cube has been identified as Bodymass-21. Dr. Nguyen infers that Bodymass-01 is just an extension of Bodymass-21 to sense multiple targets.

Four messages were then recorded from samples D-9, B-28, F-1, and A-10, repeating the same phrase.
