Special Containment Procedures: SCP-9973 is stored in a standard low-security digital media locker at Site-19. Testing may only be conducted by Level 3 personnel. Photographed Foundation test subjects must be monitored for any physical or psychological alterations following exposure. Field testing in public areas requires prior approval from the acting HMCL supervisor and must follow standard Foundation protocol.
Description: SCP-9973 is a Canon EOS 400D digital camera (manufactured 2006, serial number not present). When any photograph is taken of one or more living human beings, the resulting digital image depicts the subject(s) as a glossy plastic mannequin in the exact pose, lighting, and environment of the original scene. Background elements, non-living objects, and non-human lifeforms appear normally. Subjects are initially depicted wearing their original clothing.
When the same individual is photographed a significant number of times, progressive degradation begins to appear in subsequent images. The depicted mannequin gradually loses limbs, other body parts, and portions of its clothing. This degradation is cumulative and irreversible within the image record. No physical alterations to the photographed subject(s) have ever been observed. Medical and neurological examinations remain normal even after extreme image degradation.

Addendum: On 04/13/2013, a secondary anomalous effect was discovered. For every living subject photographed by SCP-9973 at least once, an existing mannequin somewhere in the world appears to have been retroactively replaced with an exact duplicate of the mannequin depicted in the SCP-9973 image.
Affected mannequins precisely match the appearance, pose, and clothing of the mannequin shown in the photograph, including any progressive limb loss where applicable. As of 9/22/2016, Foundation assets have identified at least 2,847 confirmed replaced mannequins across North America. The total number affected is believed to be significantly higher.
All testing involving SCP-9973 has been suspended indefinitely.
