This is Director Alba Holloway. The fact that I'm not infirm somewhere means that this file is safe to read. When you come to your conclusion, speak of it to no one. Read between the lines, and ignore the prose. That woman always had a sense for theatrics.
Once, eleven men set out to hunt a star in the wilds. The star had long fallen into a lost corner of the world, but the trail it blazed was so bright that it outshone the other stars and set the ground ablaze. Thus, these brave men followed a trail of darkness in the sky and a trail of flame on earth. The path led them through drought, sea, waste and wander, finally leading them to a cave in a forest. The star's fall had crushed the cave beneath it, thus the men spent a fortnight in excavation, child's play compared to their search.
By the light of the fifteenth sunrise, they had uncovered the mouth of the cave. The star, however, proved itself a difficult target. It had melted a searing shaft through the bottom, driving away attempts to claim it. Only one man delved into the abyss, and with a cry of joy, seized the star in his hand. He climbed out of the cave with triumph, raising the star for all to see.
The other ten men saw it clearly, and then they never saw again. They cried out, and began to weep. The remaining man, in horror at what he had done to his companions, threw the star back into the cave and guided his companions home by hand. They trekked back through the forest in silence, wandered the wastelands of ice without a word, crossed the sea with sealed lips and walked through expanses of burning sand to return to their homes.
When they arrived, many celebrated their return, but it did not take long for their neighbors to realize that the all of the wayfarers were blinded, except one. The wives and childrenof the blinded drove the outlier to the far wilds beyond their walls, cursing his name and spitting on the ground. They then turned to the wanderers, sympathetic, guiding the weary and worn to rest.
One man was approached by a painter, who asked him to recall the star so he may hang its memory to be adored for all time. The wanderer agreed, and began to speak, to weave a song of purity and poetry beyond comprehension. When the man was finished, the two of them were babbling, in tears at the light that had been described. The painter, in his frenzy, depicted the star upon the canvas, and went blind, for the image pleased the star, and so began to glow with its light.
Another man was a potter. The star had stolen his sight, but as a master of his craft, he depicted its visage on clay. When his masterwork was completed, hands numb with wear, he crowed in joy, placing it upon a pedestal for all to see. Three mothers, sons, and daughters of the village passed it by, weeping at its brilliance, tracing the carvings as the star's warmth sated their touch. When the nine broke away, they found no need for any other.
One of the men was skilled in the way of music, and he played, for two dozen people to hear, a song of its warmth. He sang of the light which glowed and stole his sight, the yearning for a chance to witness it once more. By the finale, he was reduced to a sobbing wreck, spewing nonsense of the light. His audience wept upon the conclusion, throwing themselves to the ground in veneration.
Three more men 'round ten others mimicked its heat in a fire that was but a pale mockery of the heat they felt. Despite this, the ten became sated, captivated by its warmth, they left without need for fire or armor. The three blind men, in despair over the fleeting heat, leapt into the flames.
The outcast snuck back to his home under the cover of night, and saw the village ablaze.
Men and women bleeding, crying in the streets, babbling of the cosmos, men burning alive, numb to the heat. He saw the painting of the star, the carving of the potter, and heard the songs of the dead and dying, but was not granted the bliss they felt.
In a stroke of rage, he tore the painting and threw it into fires, smashed the vase and ground it to dust between the heels of his feet, then wept before the ruins of his home. The man mourned, burying the dead, marking the graves of those who he loved and those who once loved him. Then, he retraced his steps to the cavern of the star. He cast himself into the cave, burying himself alongside the light of the star so none else may see it again.
The village burned for fifty days and fifty nights. Great storms swept the remains of the village into the sea, so that it may join the outcast in rest.
